Generic Tofranil
(Generic name: Imipramine Hydrochloride)
Tofranil Uses
Generic Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride)
is used to relive symptoms of major depression.
Also used to treat bed-wetting in children age 6 and older and incontinence in older women.
How Taken
For depression, tablets of 25 to 50 mg 3 to 4 times per day for adults with
potential increases up to 200mg per day. Teenagers should take 25 to 50mg
per day with increases up to 100mg per day. Older adults should take 25mg a day at bedtime.
Tofranil Precautions
Adverse reactions may be more likely and more severe in older patients.
A lower dose may be indicated. Use caution until you determine how the medicine affects you.
Drowsiness and lightheadedness can occur. Avoid alcohol while taking Generic Tofranil.
Missed Dose
If you take a one-time daily bedtime dose, do not take a missed dose in
the morning because it may cause drowsiness. Call your doctor.
IF you take more than one dose a day, take it as soon as you remember.
If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and
resume a regular dosing schedule. Do not double the next dose.
Tofranil Side Effects
Confusion, heartbeat irregularities, hallucinations, seizures, extreme
fatigue or drowsiness, blurred or altered vision, breathing difficulty,
constipation, impaired concentration difficulty urinating, fever, extreme
and persistent restlessness, loss of coordination and balance with difficulty
swallowing or speaking, dilated pupils, eye pain, and fainting are serious side effects.
Also, trembling, shakiness, weakness and stiffness in the extremities with a shuffling
gait should be reported to your doctor right away.
Tofranil Storage
Store in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light.
Overdose
Difficulty breathing, severe fatigue, seizures, confusion, hallucinations,
distractibility, dilated pupils, irregular heartbeat and fever are indicators of an overdose.
Seek medical help.
More Information
Take as prescribed for the full treatment period even if you begin to feel better
before the scheduled end of therapy. The decision to stop the drug should be made by your doctor.
