Generic Aralen
(Generic name: Chloroquine)
Aralen (Chloroquine) Uses
Generic Aralen is used to prevent and treat
malaria caused by specific strains of plasmodia that are susceptible to chloroquine.
It is also used with another drug as a second line of therapy for hard-to-treat amebic liver abscess.
How Taken
All dosages are for adults and adolescents. These dosages are based on body weight and should not exceed 1000mg per day.
1000mg to start, then 500mg every 6 to 8 hours and 500mg once a day on the second and third days of treatment.
Aralen - warnings, precautions
Adverse reactions in persons over the age of 60 may be more likely and more sever.
Do not drive until you determine hw the drug will affect you.
Missed Dose
If taking one or more doses a day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
If it is near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule.
Generic Aralen - Possible Side Effects
Blurred or altered vision, blood problems including low white blood cell count, sore throat, fever, anemia fatigue,
weakness, and low platelet count are extremely rare. You should call your doctor immediately if they occur.
Storage
Store Aralen in a tightly sealed container and keep away from heat, moisture and direct light.
Overdose
Increased excitability, headache, drowsiness, seizures, vision changes and heartbeat irregularities may
indicate an overdose. See medical assistance immediately and notify your doctor.
More Information
If you are taking this drug as a preventative, your doctor may want you to begin one to two weeks before you
travel to an area where malaria is prevalent.
Keep taking it while you are in the area and for four weeks after
you leave.
