(Generic name: Rivastigmine)
Drug Uses
Generic Exelon is used to treat patients who suffer from mild to moderately severe dementia associated with
Alzheimer’s disease.
Exelon is also used for those patients with mild to moderate symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Generic Exelon is not a cure, but it slows the worsening of dementia.
How Taken
When starting treatment, your doctor will determine the dosage.
The dose will be increase gradually to reduce the chances of side effects.
Generic Exelon Precautions
A doctor will only prescribe Exelon to those who have a constant caregiver able to administer the intake
of the medication. Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you know how Exelon will affect you.
Avoid alcohol and tell your doctor if you are taking any medications that result in weight loss.
Generic Exelon will cause patients to loose weight. This, combined with the very common weight loss from Parkinson’s’
disease and the deterioration of Alzheimer’s patients is extremely dangerous.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, skip it and resume your normal dosing schedule. If you miss more than two days worth of doses,
you must notify your doctor as Exelon will need to be restarted at the lowest dose.
Generic Exelon Side Effects
Side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal pain, weight loss, dizziness,
increased sweating, fatigue, weakness or loss of strength, agitation, headache, sleepiness, shaking
of the hands, confusion, difficulty in sleeping, depression, fainting, and ulcers of the stomach or intestines,
seizures, chest pain and rash. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your doctor and follow
his instruction.
Storage
Store medication away in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light. Keep Exelon extreme temperatures.
Overdose
Symptoms of an overdose are extreme side effects.
More Information
Exelon should be taken with or after food. Exelon should not be chewed, broken or crushed.
It is important to take it whole. There have been some reported cases of hallucinations and a worsening
of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Should these symptoms occur, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately.
